S Club 7: What does the S really stand for?
If you haven't heard already, S Club 7 are back! Obviously we were very excited about the whole reunion, but all these years later there is still a lingering question in our mind.
The fact card tells us they sold over 10 million records worldwide back in the day, and their children's television series was so popular that at one point it had over 90 million viewers across the globe, but what it doesn't answer is the biggest question of all: what does the S in S Club 7 stand for?
"I knew someone was going to ask that!" Tina exclaims when Digital Spy put the query to the seven-piece in London yesterday, before Jo adds: "What ones have you heard?"
There are numerous fan theories across the internet, so we roll off a few from the top of our head. First up, Saturday Club 7 (to coincide with children's television dominating Saturday mornings at the time). "Saturday Club 7?!" Paul responds. We'll take that as a no.
When this question was recently asked on Twitter, Popjustice said he once saw a demo tape labelled Sugar Club. "Sugar?! Ah that's nice," Jo replies. They're not averse to the idea, but their surprise indicates it may be the first time they've heard that theory.
So then we come to the most widely-believed theory. Simon Fuller decided to create S Club 7 the day after the Spice Girls fired him as their manager back in November 1997At the time, Fuller owned management and production company 19 Entertainment, so many speculated that with S being the 19th letter of the alphabet, that was the true origin of its use in S Club 7.
"Yeah, that's the one," Jo says once we mention the idea. "That's probably it."
They are all in agreement, with Paul adding: "I'm going with that one." Are they willing to make it official once and for all? "Shall we make it official?" Jo asks."It was never an official thing," Jon says. "When we were younger it was something our fans could come up with - what they wanted it to stand for. But I'm going for the 19 thing - that fits."
Tina makes the theory pretty concrete by suggesting: "I think that's correct as well, probably."
It's true that S Club 7 have always said the S can be something for the fans to interpret for themselves. So what does the S stand for for S Club 7 personally?
It was at this moment that Bradley gave the most brilliantly random answer ever. "For me it means Saturn. You know, the planet? It is the best planet. It's got a big ring!"
If ever S Club 7 decide to film another TV series to follow Miami 7, LA 7, Hollywood 7 and Viva S Club, then can we suggest Saturn 7? It follows them on a mission across the Solar System in a space car Chevy to discover Saturn and its rings, soundtracked by their greatest hits.
However, other members had more sentimental ideas about what the S means to them personally. "Do you know what?" Jo says. "S Club is safe for me. I feel safe when I'm with this lot. Safe and secure with my homies!"
