The University of Michigan football team
didn’t allow itself to carry distractions onto the playing field. It put
aside the one-game suspension of tight end Jake Butt, and the
accompanying hoopla that came with homecoming weekend in Ann Arbor. And
it certainly made a point of compartmentalizing the cyclone that swirled
over Michigan’s athletic department in the last week, a storm that
ended Friday with the resignation of athletic director Dave Brandon. The
Wolverines simply focused on playing football and earned a 34-10 win
over Indiana on Saturday at Michigan Stadium.
And so the countdown begins. Bring on
Michigan State. After munching on the Big Ten’s chips, dip, and — least
filling — Illinois, the Ohio State football team is through with its
appetizers. OSU shoved aside the Illini 55-14 on a frigid Saturday night
at Ohio Stadium to set up the heavyweight showdown of the conference
season. The 13th-ranked Buckeyes (7-1, 4-0 Big Ten) will travel to No. 8
Michigan State next Saturday for the latest chapter in the league’s
most compelling power struggle, not to mention a veritable play-in
contest to the Big Ten
