Week 9 of the 2014 NFL
season is chock-full of teams on bye weeks, resulting in a total of
just 13 games. However, what the schedule lacks in quantity, it more
than makes up for in quality.
One game is already in the books following an NFC South bout on Thursday Night Football between
the New Orleans Saints and Carolina Panthers. That leaves 12 contests
remaining on this week's slate featuring a couple of clashes involving
NFL heavyweights. The New England Patriots take on the Denver Broncos in a battle between AFC juggernauts and the Dallas Cowboys meet the Arizona Cardinals to determine which team should sit atop the NFC's hierarchy. These are picture-perfect examples of must-see TV.
To ensure not a moment of the forthcoming compelling action is missed, here's a look at the entire Week 9 NFL coverage map, complete with television listings and live stream information.
Week 9 brings us another showdown between two of the league's most prolific quarterbacks and future Hall of Famers, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. Both of these signal-callers are having banner years and, once again, their respective teams appear to be on the fast track to the playoffs.
Needless to say, this is the first time they will face off this season, but it may not be the last.
So, what's in store for us when these teams meet on the gridiron? Well, judging by each quarterback's stat line so far this season, we could be in for a shootout:
While both quarterbacks are putting up video-game numbers recently, they aren't the only ones producing gaudy stat lines.
New England is coming off a 51-point performance against the Chicago Bears. Tight end Rob Gronkowski dominated the game, racking up nine receptions for 149 yards and three touchdowns. Brandon LaFell is emerging as Brady's new favorite receiver as well. He accumulated 11 receptions for 124 yards and a score in Week 8.
A resent surge from these players is a direct result from Brady's resilient play under center. Here's a look at his recent efficiency, via NFL on ESPN:
Denver has a plethora of offensive weapons as well. Demaryius Thomas continues to torch secondaries and is coming off a 105-yard showing. Emmanuel Sanders has been a revelation for the Broncos. He burned the San Diego Chargers for 120 yards and three touchdowns in Week 8 and has proved to be a fantastic complement to Thomas.
These players are flourishing with Manning under center. Even Patriots coach Bill Belichick has praised the quarterback's prowess, via SportsCenter:
Both of these teams have their own strong suits on the defensive side of the ball as well. New England has looked very good against the pass this year due to a resurgent Darrelle Revis. The Patriots enter Week 9 ranked second in the league, allowing an average of just 210.9 yards per game through the air. Denver comes into the contest with the league's best run defense, allowing an average of just 72.4 yards per game on the ground.
So, who has the upper hand?
It's difficult to go against Manning's squad, but that has to be the case in this instance. While Denver is a fantastic football team, the Patriots' ability to contain the passing game should be the difference-maker. With Revis draped all over Thomas, the rest of the secondary can focus on keeping Sanders in check.
While Denver boasts an extremely good run defense, Brady has proved time and time again he's more than capable of succeeding in a one-dimensional offense. With a friendly crowd behind them, this one goes to the Patriots in a close game.
