Mizoram Premier League player Peter Biaksangzuala dies after suffering spinal injury during celebratory somersault

A soccer player in India’s Mizoram Premier League has died after suffering an injury during a goal celebration.
Peter Biaksangzuala celebrated with a somersault after scoring in Bethlehem Vengthlang’s match against Chanmari West on Tuesday. The 23-year-old landed awkwardly, seriously injuring his spinal cord, and was taken to hospital for surgery.
Teammates hurried to his side and quickly motioned for a trainer.
Biaksangzuala was pronounced dead at Aizawl Civil Hospital on Sunday, five days after the incident, The Mizoram Premier League announced on its Facebook page.
“It has been a sad day for Mizoram football and the demise of the footballer shook his teammates, footballers and fans alike all over Mizoram,” the statement read, describing Biaksangzuala as a man with “a good heart.”
Bethlehem Vengthlang FC plans to retire Biaksangzuala’s No. 21.
“Peter was a lad with good manner who always maintained his discipline on and off the pitch. I don’t think there are many like him,” the club’s coach, Danny Lalduhawma, said in the league’s Facebook statement.
