The Newark judge determined earlier Thursday that the ‘Real Housewives of New Jersey’ starlet would serve her term first so that Joe Giudice can take care of their four daughters in Towaco, N.J. The couple pleaded guilty to mail, wire and bankruptcy fraud. Joe Giudice also pleaded guilty to tax fraud.
The 'Real Housewives of New Jersey' star Teresa Giudice (R) and her husband, Joe, arrive at their sentencing hearing at the Federal Courthouse in Newark on Thursday.
Introducing the real inmates of New Jersey.A federal judge in Newark sentenced reality stars Joe and Teresa Giudice from “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” to prison terms for trying to finance their lifestyles with $5 million in fraudulent mortgage and construction loans.
Desperate to avoid becoming the star of a real-life “Orange Is the New Black” scenario, Teresa shed her tough-girl TV persona, breaking down in tears and telling the judge she was terrified about landing behind bars.
“I’m not gonna deny it, I’m so scared. I’m really scared,” she said. “I’m a good woman of faith and heritage.”
Sobbing hard, Teresa added, “This is not how I was raised. I will make this right, your honor.”
But Judge Esther Salas was not moved by the performance and sentenced her to 15 months behind bars.
“My gut says Teresa Giudice deserves to be in jail for a period of time,” Salas said. “I have hope and I have faith that you have learned your lesson.”
“You’re a fabulous mom,” the judge told her. “This doesn’t define you as a mom.”
The judge gave Joe a tougher sentence of 41 months. But she is making Teresa do her time first — starting after Christmas on Jan. 5.
